BURSA GRAND MOSQUE: THE PINNACLE OF OTTOMAN ARCHITECTURE AND ART

Bursa Grand Mosque (Bursa Ulu Camii) is one of the largest and most important structures of the founding period of the Ottoman Empire. Located in the historical center of Bursa, this mosque was built by Yıldırım Bayezid between 1396 and 1400 and has earned an important place in history as the first major mosque of Ottoman architecture. It reflects the artistic and cultural heritage of the Ottoman period with both its architectural structure and interior decorations.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Bursa is one of the first capitals of the Ottoman Empire and played an important role in the establishment process of the empire. Bursa Grand Mosque is a structure built by the Ottoman Sultan Yıldırım Bayezid as an expression of gratitude to God after the Victory of Nicopolis. According to rumors, when Yıldırım Bayezid won the victory, he vowed to build 20 mosques, but later built these 20 mosques in the form of a single large mosque. The architect of the Grand Mosque is Ali Neccar, and this giant structure was referred to as a symbol of conquests in the early periods of the Ottoman Empire.

ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

The Grand Mosque bears traces of the pre-Ottoman Seljuk style from an architectural perspective and is the harbinger of the Ottoman mosque architecture that would develop afterwards. It is a work that combines traditional structure with innovations in many aspects.

1. Dome System

One of the most remarkable features of the mosque is that it has 20 domes. The number of domes was preferred in order to increase the width and size of the mosque. Each of the domes sits on a square area and is arranged centrally. This architectural feature provides integrity and symmetry in the interior.

2. Interior Layout

The interior of the mosque has a very wide and spacious structure. Bursa Grand Mosque was built large enough to accommodate 5000 people, and this width allowed mass acts of worship to be carried out easily during the Ottoman period. The perfect harmony of wood, stone, and marble craftsmanship is seen in the interior.

3. Minbar

The minbar of the mosque is one of the pinnacle points of woodwork. Made of a single piece of walnut wood, the minbar is adorned with geometric designs and plant motifs. Finely crafted star figures and complex geometric patterns have been added inside these motifs. The minbar is considered a masterpiece where calligraphy and geometric art are masterfully brought together.

4. Art of Calligraphy and Kaligrafi

Bursa Grand Mosque is also famous for the art of calligraphy, which holds an important place in Turkish Islamic art. There are 192 inscriptions inside the mosque. These writings were made by calligrapher Ali Bin İlyas Ali and were placed in various parts of the mosque in the form of inscriptions containing verses from the Quran and the 99 names of Allah. Especially the large-scale calligraphies on the main walls add a different spiritual depth to the mosque.

5. Fountain (Şadırvan)

Another remarkable feature of the Grand Mosque is the fountain located in the interior. The fountain is located in the middle of the mosque, and the sound of the water adds peace to the quiet worship environment in the mosque. The location of the fountain in the interior stands out as a rare feature in the Islamic world from an architectural perspective. This detail adds an aesthetic value to the mosque as well as being functional.

ART AND AESTHETICS

Bursa Grand Mosque attracts attention not only with its architecture but also with its artistic value. The interior decorations of the mosque reveal the artistic development of the Ottoman period. Calligraphy, geometric patterns, wood and stone craftsmanship can be seen in every corner of the mosque. The interior of the mosque offers a simple beauty; however, the importance given to details within this simplicity increases the magnificence of the structure.

1. Wall Decorations and Domes

The domes and walls of the mosque are covered with finely engraved writings and patterns. These decorations came from the hands of the famous artists of the period and reflect the subtleties of Ottoman art.

2. Light and Space

The 20 domes of the mosque fill the interior with natural light. The light coming from these domes creates a peaceful atmosphere in the large and wide interior of the mosque. This arrangement, which offers simplicity and brightness together inside the mosque, provides a peaceful environment for worshippers.

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL IMPORTANCE

Bursa Grand Mosque, beyond being merely a place of worship, functioned as a social and cultural center during the Ottoman period. It became an important meeting point in the city with its large square. Located among the mosques known as the "Friday mosque" in the Islamic world, Bursa Grand Mosque was both the center of the religious life of the people of Bursa at that time and hosted meetings attended by important statesmen.
